Branching Out

Hello everyone,

Ever struggle with branching out? 

Personally I struggle with branching out because I like to plan ahead. I like the structure and knowing that I’m getting somewhere. When I don’t have that structure or can’t see the end. Lets just say it stresses me out. Big time.

A good extreme comparison is like the Lady from Nim’s Island except for the fact that I like people, I’m not afraid to leave my house, I’m not afraid of germs, etc.

So often I prevent that from ever happening by, planning ahead or thinking about every possibility. For example, I get up earlier so it’s guaranteed that I’ll make it to work on time. It’s the little things that helped me stay sane.

Another thing is everyone likes comfort. Branching out isn’t comfortable it’s uncomfortable. You have to step out of the protective bubble and do something you’ve never done before. You have to go to places you’ve never been. You have to reach out to people you normally would never reach out to. It’s a colossal step that many people are unwilling to take because it’s scary. Its unpredictable, kind of like being a writer…

You can research and plan all you want but it doesn’t guarantee success. That doesn’t mean you quit, rather keep ongoing with it. You just have to find a structure and when you find out what works for you fine tune it and use it.

Here’s a handy dandy list to help you stay sane!

  1. Drink coffee
    Caffeine is the answer to everything it’s also a natural diuretic. So if you’re having some bowel problems drink coffee.
  2. Get Enough Sleep
    Believe it or not is scientifically proven that if you don’t have enough sleep you gain weight, and it releases stress hormones. Stress hormones make it difficult for you to think coherently.
  3. Begin with the End in Mind
    When you start up, think of where you want it to take you. When those times of doubt come, knowing your end goal will help you through the valley of despair.
  4. First things First
    Ignore all the random stuff that’s thrown at you and finish what you started then go back to new projects. Unless you need a breather, then do something else but always go back to what you started.
  5. Be Proactive , Don’t talk GO. DO.

Notice anything? Three actions on the list are from the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. The 7 Habits book is a life altering read that talks about 7 habits that help you be an amazing leader as well as a successful person in any venture you pursue.

  2. The one thing that I have always forced myself to do is to place myself in an uncomfortable situation. Public speaking or a position at work I know nothing about or having a serious conversation covering a topic I’d rather avoid.

    I have always felt it is healthy to push ourselves, to experience failures or success. Whatever it is we need to remove ourselves from that protective bubble and see the other side of the world.
